Columbus South Side Area Commission

Public Services Committee

May 2026 Meeting Notes

  • Alum Creek trail connector
    • Kathy reached out to Chris Elliot, Ohio Soil Recycling, about the Alum Creek connector shown on the city’s Bike Plus map as being planned along the edge of his property. His thoughts:
      • there is a little left of the property left to be capped along Integrity Drive and will take another ~1-1.5 years to complete
      • every week people reach out asking to buy the property for uses like multi tenant warehousing & cold storage
      • the city has an easement along the north from Integrity to the Alum Creek trail to allow maintenance access (there is a gate on each end - when I walked the trail a couple weeks ago the city’s gate on the east end was open and I walked to Ohio Soil’s west gate which was locked)
      • the city several years ago was willing to make this easement part of the trail but wanted Ohio Soil to maintain liability and provide any fencing between the trail and the property they are still working on
    • This was brought up at meeting with City/MORPC/COTA, Brian Ashworth with the City indicated they had abandoned the Alum Creek connector off Integrity Drive due to concerns about environmental state. Rory McGuiness said he would follow up.
  • LinkUS - Southeast Transit Study is target as part of next phase but no further planning or design has begun
  • Millbrook Park - City is now claiming the overgrowth at the park is not on City of Columbus property
  • COTA Short Range Transit Plan (major changes are highlighted in the slides Kathy shared)
    • This is a plan for the next 5 years. Each of the individual changes proposed will have additional opportunities for public comment before the changes are made.
  • Fairwood sidewalks - ideally would extend to Marion Rd on south end, and to Frebis if on west side on north end
  • Water main replacement
    • Upcoming project in southeast German Village and Schumacher Place
    • 18 month project
  • Trash issues at mobile home park off of Smith Road
  • Rat problems in Schumacher Place
    • Now handled by code enforcement - 311
  • Speeding on High Street (capital priority)
  • Land bank lots - request for a representative to come to area commission to discuss
